William Martinez, Liberal, Hopefully Not Confirmed Liberal
2. August 2010 by Satire V.
William Martinez is Obama’s pick, nominated by Senators Bennet and Udall, to fill a District Court of Colorado vacancy. As Senator Udall proudly states on his website;
“I believe in strong, well-balanced courts that serve the needs of our citizens. Bill Martinez brings that sense of balance because of his broad legal background, professionalism, and outstanding intellect. I am pleased to have recommended Bill, and I am certain that, once confirmed, he will make an outstanding judge.”
He is joined in his excitement about the qualifications of Martinez by Senator Bennet on his web site;
“Bill embodies the American dream and is an immigrant success story. He was born in Mexico and immigrated with his family to the United States at a young age. He was the first in his family to attend college and law school. His rise through the legal profession is a great example to law students in my state.”
“I am proud to come before this Committee and highlight the experience and accomplishments of this superbly qualified nominee. Bill Martinez will be an asset to the federal bench. “
A well-balanced court. The American dream. Superbly qualified. Broad legal background. Sense of balance.
You would think from such comments that Martinez was a centrist, non-activist judge to be. You would be very wrong. Let’s take a quick look at his questionnaire for judicial nominees that was presented to the Senate’s Committee on the Judiciary.
Martinez lists the following employment of interest:
The Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago. This organization receives much of its funding from the Joyce Foundation. The Joyce Foundation is known to advocate radical liberal and environmentalist positions such as the elimination of gun ownership rights and the destruction of industries that consume natural resources (such as logging). The Joyce Foundation also supports MALDEF, the NAACP, the Sierra Club, the WWF, the ACLU, the National Council of La Raza, and other liberal organizations. Barack Obama served on the Foundation’s board before becoming a U.S. Senator.
More interesting are Martinez’s memberships, which Senators Udall and Bennet fail to make any mention. Let me just hit the high points:
Amnesty International
ACLU of Colorado
Colorado Public Radio
Greenpeace, USA
Human Rights Watch
International Rescue Committee
Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund
National Legal Aid and Defender Association
Most of you are probably aware that the first five organizations on this list run from very to radically liberal. The final three are all (yes, that includes the IRC) advocates for illegal immigrants and support amnesty and full legal protection for illegals. MALDEF advocates open borders, free college tuition for illegal immigrants, lowered educational standards to accommodate Hispanics, and voting rights for criminals. Not exactly a “balanced” list is it?
Martinez cannot be expected to ignore his personal bias and agendas when such are so extreme and often run counter to the rule of law and our Constituion.
He will not serve a well-balanced court. He does not support the American dream. He is not superbly qualified, and in fact is entirely unqualified to serve on the Federal bench. His legal background is certainly not broad; a more narrow background would be hard to find. He certainly doesn’t embody a sense of balance.
The only appropriate action for the Senate would be to refuse confirmation of Martinez, but that won’t happen under a Congress that fully intends to thwart the will of the people as often as possible before (and after) election day.
